Evaluation - Emily Tufano
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
For our media project we decided to choose Justin Timberlake
as our artist. During our music video for Justin Timberlake’s new song ‘Tunnel
Vision’ we had aspects of our media project that developed and challenged forms
and conventions of real media products. Such as having sexually objectifying
shots in our music video such as close ups of lips and eyes when Justin was
singing. We also have shots of a female posing in a sexually objectifying way
while being dressed in a red top which insinuates lust. This is common in media
products, and it was mentioned within our target audience expectations of what
Tunnel Vision should be like.
While watching our music video you will see a narrative
throughout. However, the narrative will be broken up by having shots of Justin
singing. This is common in music videos as it engages the audience and keeps
them interested by having a narrative, though by adding clips of Justin singing
it breaks up the music video and gives fans an opportunity to see their star sing
their new song.
To keep Justin up to date and in the spot light we needed to
keep his music video different from previous work, to keep the fans interested
and the media interested. Therefore, we decided to show Justin’s dark side. We
achieved this by turning him into a stalker, who is stalking a woman in a
relationship. This challenges forms and conventions of real media texts as most
media products want to show their artist in a ‘clean cut’ manner which
distances them from previous mistakes.
How effective is the combination of your main product and
ancillary texts?
I believe that the combination of our main product and the
ancillary texts work well together as there is a current theme without. As our
music video goes down quite a dark route and is mainly based on obsession and
stalking we have tried to continue this theme throughout our ancillary work.
Our CD artwork shows Justin looking mysterious with a hat on and him look down.
This is a common pose for Justin in the photos shown in his web page, it adds a
element of mystery which can be related back to the film.
What have you learned from your audience feed back?
Audience feedback gave us valuable knowledge into what went
well and what did not. We filmed people that fitted the target audience
criteria (teenagers) and they gave us their views on the music video. The
overall response was positive with the audience saying that they liked how we
added a twist to Justin’s image and made him mysterious and aloof. On the other
hand, there were a few improvements suggested these were that we needed more
rapid cuts as we seemed to have repeated a few shots more than once. We took
this on board and decided to take more shots to add in.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research,
planning and evaluating stages?
Media technologies were vital in the construction and research,
planning and evaluating stages of our project. Without media technologies we
would have not been able to create our music video or ancillary texts. In the
construction and research stages we used media technologies such as Premier,
Wix, Garage band, green screen, Photo shop. Premier was used to edit our music
video and turn it into the final piece. Without Premier we would have not been
able to create the music video. Green screen also helped with the making of the
music video process as we used the green screen to add effect which makes our
music video much more professional. Wix was used to create our website for
Justin, this enabled us to maximise media coverage and consequently sales as
fans were able to keep up to date with Justin’s latest news via the website. Photoshop
was used to edit photos of Justin, without the use of photo shop our photos
would have not been as eye catching and proficient. During the planning and
evaluation stages the media technologies used were Survey monkey, Facebook,
Prezi. Survey Monkey is an online media technology which allows the user to
create surveys. By creating surveys it helped in the planning and evaluation stages
as we could get responses from our target audience on what they wanted Justin
to be like in the music video. Therefore, we could create a music video that
our target audience wanted. Facebook was used firstly to allow people to take
our survey and secondly used to promote our music video. Prezi, was used to
create presentations that documented various aspects of planning, evaluation
and construction. Prezi’s were made to show audience feedback, target audience
information, media technologies used.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media product
uses common forms and conventions of real media products in a number of ways.
We have tried to make it as memorable as possible by completely changing the
way in which the music artist is portrayed. Altering the artists image is a common technique used within music videos, it is important to keep reinventing a music artist so that they still seem new to the audience. The audience does not want to keep seeing the same types of music videos again and again from the same artist. However we reinvented our artist’s image by showing a darker side to him
which is not a common way of reinventing an artist image. Usually artist's try to reinvent themselves in a better light and try to show their fans they have improved on aspects which they have been criticised for, where as we have done the opposite, we have tried to emphasise our artists problems and exaggerate them.
Another common motif within our music video is that we have a narrative in our video
which is common within other music videos, there are also breaks from the
narrative to show the music artist singing. This is a very common motif within music videos, it has almost become expected when you see a music video. If you just had the whole video of the artist singing then the audience are quite likely going to get bored, however a purely narrative based video may not please the artists fans as they would like to see more of the artists singing.
We also have sexually objectifying shots in our video and de-fragmented body shots for an example we have a close up of my lips while I am singing. Camera shots like these are common within music videos as they make the video more abstract and interesting.

I think that the combination of our product and our
ancillary texts work well. The ancillary texts such as the CD cover and the
website use bright and bold colours which infers that the music video will have
a happy theme to it however the video is actually the opposite to that, the
theme of our video is quite dark, to sum up the video it is about obsession and
stalking. I think that the video and ancillary texts work well together as they
contradict each other and add a sense of surprise when watching the video.
The images we created of our music artist also work well with our music video as the images do not show the artist looking happy, they are of him looking down at the floor or looking into the distance. These images are on the website, when seeing them on the website before watching the video, they may be interpreted differently but after watching the video you will understand them and realise how they fit into the theme of the song.

From our audience feedback we have learned quite a lot, we learnt where we needed to improve our video and also what worked well within our video. The main issue with our video was the amount of repetition, there was quite a lot of repeating shots in our video, this was due to the fact that we did not have enough clips and we needed to fill time by repeating the same shots. We have worked on improving this by just spending some more time filming to get some more clips so that there is not as much repetition in our video.
In our video we have
used loads of different media technologies, we have used green screen to add a
background while I am singing, this makes the scene more interesting and makes
the video look more professional. We have also used a number of different
software programmes such as garage band, Photoshop and premiere; we used garage
band to create a radio show promoting the song which we are doing. We used
Photoshop to create the CD cover for the song and other images for the website,
this again was for promoting our media product. Premiere was used to edit the
music video. We also used websites such as wix and survey monkey, we used wix used to
create the artist’s website, the website was used as another promotional method
to represent the artist. Survey monkey was used in the evaluation stages to
gain audience feedback on how we could improve our music video and what worked
well within our music video. Media technologies were extremely useful throughout all stages of our product. These technologies were not only helpful but they were also necessary, we would not have been able to create a video at all without some of these technologies, for example without premiere then we would not have been able to edit our video or even put the clips in order.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our media product uses common forms and conventions of real media products in various ways. Firstly, we have tried to make the music video as memorable as possible, by entirely transforming the way in which the music artist (Justin Timberlake) is portrayed whilst adding controversy to the music video to aid in making it memorable as well as unique. We also used a familiar technique used in many music videos which is changing the artists image; this plays an important role in music videos as it enables a music artist to be reinvented continuously allowing them to be perceived as ‘new/fresh’ to the audience. In doing so, the audience will not see the same types of music videos repetitively, but a change, from the same music artist. In our music video, we altered our music artist’s image by portraying a mysterious side to him which is not a common way of reinventing a music artist’s image. Typically, music artist's try to ‘reinvent’ themselves in a positive manor in an attempt to appeal to their target audience, where as we have done the complete opposite by emphasising our music artists problems and exaggerate them, in this case portraying him as a stalker. Another popular motif amongst music videos is the use of a narrative which gives the music video a structure. We also included breaks from the narrative to show the music artist singing which is very common motif within music videos; it has almost become a certainty within a music video. This is an important feature within a music video as it allows the audience to feel engaged instead of bored watching a music video based only on a narrative or just a music artist singing; where as both aspects enhance the music video. We have also included sexually objectifying shots and de-fragmented body shots in our music video. This creates a positive effect on the audience as they can engage with the video as well; as making it appealing, more abstract and creative.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
I think that the combination of our product and our ancillary texts are very effective and work well together. The ancillary texts we created, the CD cover and the website, use bright and bold colours which suggests that the music video will have a positive theme to it, however in contrast the video is actually quite the opposite to that as the theme of our video is quite dark and mysterious. I think that the video and ancillary texts work well together as they contradict each other and add a sense of surprise when watching the video. The ancillary texts help to enhance the music video and the music artists ‘new’ perception. The images we created of our music artist also work well with our music video as the images show the artist looking mysterious and unhappy. These images can be misinterpreted if they are seen before the music video as the audience will not realise till after the watching the video, how they fit into the theme or narrative of the song.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Our audience feedback was very useful and allowed our group to learn from it. Firstly, we learnt where we needed to improve our video to make it more appealing and clearer as the narrative had a tendency to drag on. We also learnt what worked well within our video for example when we split the screen into four different images; this was appealing to the audience as it is not usually seen. The main issue with our video was the amount of repetition; there were a lot of repetitive shots in our video. This was due to the fact that we did not have enough clips and we needed to fill time by repeating the same shots as well as using ‘filler’ shots. We have looked to improve this by spending some more time filming and creating different scenes to get more clips so that there the repetition is removed and the video is more interesting. In addition to this, we learnt that the audience had a mixed review on the new artist portrayed. The typical fans prefer the usual artist they say, however, the younger audience liked the fact that we changed his character and portrayed him in a different light allowing them to judge which ‘character’ they prefer. Overall, I think that the audience feedback was constructive and positive as it allowed us to make amendments and take credit for the positive aspects of the music video and ancillary texts.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In our video we have used many different media technologies at various stages to get the best end product possible. We used green screen to add a background, fitting in with the narrative, while the artist is singing; making the scene more interesting and the video look more professional. We have also used a number of different software programmes such as Garage Band, Photoshop and Premiere. We used Premiere, which is a user friendly software to edit the music video. We also used websites such as Wix and Survey Monkey. Survey monkey was used in the evaluation stages to find out from the audience what worked well and what needed improving in the music video. Media technologies were extremely useful throughout all stages of our product and ancillary texts. These technologies were very helpful but most importantly necessary as we would not have been able to create a video or quality images without some of these technologies, for example without premiere then we would not have been able to edit our video or even put the clips in order and without Photoshop we would not have been able to edit the images and make them look of a professional standard.
